Spanish

At Newhall Park we believe learning a foreign language encourages us to communicate with people from all around the globe, who have cultures, beliefs and a way of life that is different to our own. It encourages us to question our own customs and traditions and it deepens our understanding of the world. It provides the foundation for learning further languages, equipping us with the skills for future travel, study or work abroad.

As the UK is becoming an increasingly multicultural society, it is our duty to provide our children with an understanding of other languages and cultures. The MFL provision at Newhall Park Primary School is designed to reflect this. Our principal aim is to develop children’s knowledge, skills and understanding of the language, with a secondary focus on geography and cultural understanding. Our chosen language for Key Stage 2 is Spanish, based on the preferred languages chosen at Key Stage 3 in nearby secondary schools. Our school also welcomes Spanish native speakers each year, as part of a teacher training exchange. We recognise that Spanish is a more popular choice because it is one of the top five languages spoken throughout the world. Therefore, we believe that our children are more likely to use their Spanish language skills on foreign family holidays abroad. The key elements of MFL learning in Newhall Park are:

  • Inclusive and enjoyable for all  pupils, regardless of specific learning needs, gender, ethnicity or cultural identity.

  • Specifically focused on developing  speaking , listening and interacting with each other to develop effective communication skills (a key foundation for Literacy).

  • Engaging, interesting and interactive to  stimulate children’s creativity.

  • Promoting tolerance and mutual respect by comparing and contrasting cultures, traditions and beliefs, which are different to our own.
